A brush with death caused by a violent intestinal haemorrhage, and his marriage to Alma Schindler (‘superhuman love’) a year later: these are often cited as major biographical stimuli for Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (1901-02), inspiring both the death-haunted turbulence of Part One, the tender, impassioned Adagietto – strikingly used in Visconti’s 1971 film Death in Venice – and the exuberant Finale. Both events had an influence, as had his immersion in Bachian counterpoint.

Mahler proposed to her in the fall of 1901, and the symphony, with its trajectory from mourning to triumph, reflects this development in its composer’s personal life. The symphony is in five movements, which are grouped into three parts. The work opens with a funeral march that starts with a trumpet fanfare whose rhythm dominates the movement. The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are voice-and-piano and voice-and-orchestra settings of German folk poems chosen from a collection of the same name assembled by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano and published by them, in heavily redacted form, between 1805 and 1808. Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is a work of intense emotions and huge orchestral scope that proves a challenge to even the greatest orchestras and conductors. "Nobody understands it I wish I could conduct the first performance 50 years after my death." So said Mahler of his Fifth Symphony, yet it has become one of his best-loved works. Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was composed in 1901 and 1902, mostly during the summer months at Mahler's holiday cottage at Maiernigg. Among its most distinctive features are the trumpet solo that opens the work with a rhythmic motif similar to the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, the horn solos in the third movement and the frequently performed Adagietto.

Mahler's Fifth Symphony is scored for a huge orchestra of flutes, oboes, English horn, clarinets, bassoons, contrabassoon, horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, triangle, glockenspiel, tam-tam, harp, and strings.
